Evaluation

Evaluation

1. What ways does your music promotion package use, develop or challenge form and conventions of real music promotion?

The music promotion package that we made to go with our music video has similarities to the forms and conventions of real music promotion packages. We created strong links between our album cover and the promotional poster so that the customers can easily recognise the product in a shop from the poster and sales may increase for the product in a shop from the poster and sales may increase for the product. We have also followed the forms and conventions of including a picture of the artist on the front cover of the album and the poster as this way again potential customers will recognise the product from the artists.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and Ancillary texts?

When creating our main product of the music video we firstly conducted some research to see what people would want to see in the video. When deciding where to locate our video are results showed that most people wanted the location to link to the song. As our song is called Out on The River we chose a location that we felt would show a good relationship between the video and song. Our results also showed that most people like the visuals to link to the lyrics, when analysing the lyrics we thought the song could be talking about relationships so we incorporated this into our video. Also people preferred narrative based videos rather than performance based. So we based our video on a break up and the main character looking back and reflecting on his relationship, whilst by a river where him and his girlfriend had been before. Over 15 people that we questioned prefer bright, colourful music videos but as there were still over 10 people that preferred black and white music videos we decided to use both. This way our narrative could easily be understood. Finally people preferred realism and the artist to appear normal so we kept our music video very naturalistic.

I think that the combination of my main product and the Ancillary texts works well together as our music video is based in a garden by rivers and trees etc and this is also shown throughout the album cover and poster ,as the photographs used show the scenery well. They also work well together as in the music video it shows flash backs in black and white and the poster is also in black and white to show a similarity and connection between the two products. I think these products easily show a relationship to the music video so customers would recognise these products in a store.

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

We got an audience to watch our music video and then showed them are ancillary texts; they then answered 15 questions about them. One of the questions was what do you like about the music video? Some of the responses where that they like how the black and white sections where used in the video, how the situation/narrative was realistic and 3 people said they liked how the setting matched the song. When asked what would you change about the music video? The feedback was to change the lip Syncing and to have more effects and camera shots, so we learnt from this that we should of included a wider range of effects and camera shots to make the video more interesting. When asked what they liked about the poser? the responses where they liked the picture and the font used and also how we had included the artist in the poster as this made the poster relate to the music video. We also asked what they liked about the front cover? A lot of people said they liked how they could see a link between the poster, the album cover and then the music video. We finally asked what you would change about the album cover as a whole? A few people said to have a wider variety of photographs used on each panel and include more photographs of the artist. We learnt from this that if we made the album cover again we would include different photographs to make it more interesting for the eye. These are the rest of my results.

4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?

http://www.blogger.com/ This was really useful as because it is online and accessible from any computer I could access and upload work from anywhere. Also because the task was group work it was easy to share work between group members. I used a lot of different media technologies when in the researching and construction stages. In the research stages I used the Internet and websites such as http://www.myspace.com/ and http://www.youtube.co.uk/ as this helped me to find out about existing music videos and what I like and dislike about them. In the construction stages I used software on the computer including Premier Pro and Paint Shop, these where very use full as I could upload and create videos and pictures. This was where I created my music video and ancillary texts. I used a still camera and a digital camera to capture the footage and photos needed for the construction stages. To display all my work I used http://www.blogger.com/ as this is a good easy way to display my work so it is easily accessible for people to view.

We used Premire Pro software to create our music video as it is really easy to edit the clips of footage you have and combine them together with the music and create the music video.
