Codes and Conventions

Codes and Conventions

· The star/ band/ artist are usually in the music video
· The lyrics are normally amplified by the visuals
· Most of the videos we have seen are linear but some where also non linear
· A lot of videos we watched where narrative based
· Camera movement/ editing normally fits in with the beat of the song
· The visuals use iconography that are reminiscent of the genre
· There are usually some aspects of performance though they may be direct or indirect
· There are usually lots of close up shots of the star/ band/ artist
· Normally a range of camera angles are used
· The star/ band/ artists image is amplified through the genre
· If any special effects are used they are normally kept very simple
· Lip Syncing is usually used
· The video is normally set in realistic locations e.g. Train station, club
· There is usually more than one character in the music video
· The characters don’t seem to interact a lot with each other in the video
· The narratives are mostly closed narratives
