Music Video Study 5

Cheryl Cole – Fight for this love

In the video Fight for this love there is always direct mode of address as the artist Cheryl Cole sings the lyrics directly to the camera throughout the music video. Aspects of performance are used throughout as the video is not narrative and has Cheryl performing, singing and doing dance routines.

The video does not have a narrative, it doesn’t follow a story line instead it is all performance based. It is non linear as the video does not have a clear beginning middle and end, instead it has the artist Cheryl Cole singing/dancing in different locations and then cuts to the different locations in a random order.

The video does create an image for the artist it suggests to the audience that Cheryl Cole is a fighter and fights and works for what ever she does in life also suggesting that is how she has got so far in her career. It also shows she is independent but can also work well as part of a team. She can also lead the team, this is shown through herself leading the dance routine, she wares a different outfit from the rest of the dancers so therefore stands out as independent.

The visual elements do relate to the song but they mostly disjuncture the lyrics as the video is performance based and have a lot of dance routines. It also amplifies some of the lyrics as Cheryl Cole is wearing a red solider suit representing that she is fighting for this love.

The video has a lot of different settings but they all link together as are black, white and red with writing or patterns based on love moving on the walls/backgrounds. Cheryl’s outfits also links in with the colour theme e.g. her wearing the red and black solider uniform, These colours work well with the lyrics of the song as it is all about love and the colour red represents this well.

The use of the camera is used well in the video it uses lots of close ups of her face singing the lyrics to the camera. A mid shot is used of her and her dance group behind near the start of the video this represents to the audience that she has a big army behind her and fits in with the theme of fighting. A full shot is used to show Cheryl and her dancers performing their dance routine as this lets the audience see the performance clearly. There is a close up of her lips used as this relates to love, there is also a close up of the studs on one of her outfits and this could represent weapons at war.

At the start of the video a lot of fade in and fade outs are used and the editing is very slow which fits in with the slow start to the song. Then later the song speeds up and the editing becomes quick and sharp which really works well as this fits in with the beat of the music.

There are a lot of special effects used in this video as words and patterns are moving around on the walls/backgrounds of the locations. The genre of this video would be pop as it is a very upbeat song and you could also tell by the style of the video and how dance routines have been incorporated into it. I think the target audience for this video would be from teenagers up to middle aged women as they will be able to relate to the lyrics of the song.

Music Video Study 4

Taylor Swift – You belong with me

In the video You belong with me it has both direct and indirect mode of address as she sings to the lyrics to the audience but for most of the video she is acting out the narrative. The performance aspects of the video is the artist Taylor Swift acting out the narrative, she plays two characters in the video the main geeky girl and the popular girl.

The video is narrative based as is linear as it has a clear beginning middle and end as does not flash back. In the beginning of the video the main character likes the boy who lives next door but he is going out with the popular girl, then in the middle the boy argues with his girl friend and finally the geeky main character is transformed and she gets together with the boy at the school dance.

This video creates a good image for the artist Taylor swift as it shows her as a normal teenage girl going through typical high school problems e.g. boy problems and popularity. This also gives her target audience something they can relate to.

The visual elements of the video illustrate the lyrics of the song as the lyrics are telling a love story and this is then shown through the performance from Taylor Swift. It works well as the lyrics match what is happenings in the video.

The video is set well as the locations match the genre and target audience of the song as it is typical places a teenager would be a bedroom, school field, street and high school dance. This means that not only can Taylor Swifts target audience relate to the lyrics they can also relate to the places/locations of the video.

The use of camera was used well; a mid shot is used to show them holding signs at their bedroom windows. Also a point of view shot is used to show that the boy is watching her dance this works well as adds to the realism of the video. A close up is used when the boy moves her hair out of Taylor’s face showing a connection between them. There is also another close up used when he gets in his car and hugs his girlfriend as it shows her making an evil face at Taylor’s geeky character displaying her mean personality to the audience. At the end of the video the camera zooms in on the kiss which adds to and displays the happy ending.

Editing is also used well in the video shot reverse shot is used allot when they are holding the signs up at their bedroom windows and by using this it helps to show the reactions of each character. The edits are quite slow as they fit in well with the music as the song is not very fast. A fade out is used at the end of the video as they are kissing which shows the audience it is the end.

I think the video is representing a typical teenage girls life and showing fans that high school isn’t just about popularity and looks, and that it isn’t always the popular girl that gets the boy. It shows that dreams can come true and helps the target audience to realise that it is more about personality.

I didn’t think any special effects where used on the video as I think they wanted to keep it very naturalistic again to that the target audience could relate to the video. The genre of the music is country/pop as Taylor swift sings country music but the beat is quite upbeat so it is also partly pop. The target audience for this video would be children and young teens as they can relate to the lyrics and the situations in the video.

Music Video study 3

Chemical Brothers – Hey boy Hey girl

In the Chemical brothers video there is indirect mode of address as there is acting throughout the film but it is not directed to the audience, the audience are just watching a story. There are no elements of performance as the band does not perform in the video as it is fully narrative based.

The video is all narrative as it shows the story of a girl growing up, the story moves forwards through flash forwards but it is still linear as it doesn’t flashback. The video has a clear beginning middle and end. The story follows one girl’s life and it starts on a school trip to a museum with a boy picking on her as he might fancy her. The middle is her in a night club and finally the end is where she leaves the night club to go home.

The video creates an image for the band that they are individual and take risks as their video is very different from a normal music video because of the special effects used to create the skeletons. It shows they are of the moment and are trendy and stylish threw the video as it represents their culture threw the music.

The visual elements amplify the song and its lyrics as it gives a meaning to the song. The images do make sense to the words as there is a boy and a girl in the video, but there are also elements of disjuncture as when everyone turns into skeletons you can’t tell who are a boy or a girl.

The video starts of set in on a school bus to a museum then in the second part of the video were set in a night club. The night club looks like it could be an illegal rave as the characters in the video are not very dressed up and this represents the 90’s genre for dance music.

When the little boy spits on the little girls page an upward tilt is used showing a point of view of the girl looking up seeing who has done it. Shot reverse shot is used with the little boy and girl to help show their reactions to the audience. A zoom is used to focus in on the x-ray of her hand which also links into the fascination of skeletons.

The editing fits the song well as there are some fast cuts but when the lyrics stop at the start and the music changes the school children a running in slow motion which works well. Editing is used well in the flash forward in time as the girl goes from a young child to a young women as she is looking in the mirror and sees herself as a skeleton and then again is looking in the mirror when she has grown up but now in the new location of a night club.

I think the representation of this video could mean that it doesn’t matter who you are or what sex you are people are all the same this could be represented threw the boy bullying her as a child and the guy in the night club trying to chat her up, and then she sees them all as skeletons as does not judge them by their gender.

Special effects are used well in this video as they are used when the girl sees people as skeletons. The genre of this music is dance music you can tell this because there are only a few lyrics and they are very repetitive and the beats are fast. I think the target audience for this video would be 15-30 year olds as I think the fast beats and how the band is represented as of the time means younger people would listen to it. The type of music channel you would find it on would be MTV dance because the genre of the song is dance.

Music Video Study 2

Light house family – I wish I knew

In the music video I wish I knew by the Light House Family the lead singer uses direct mode of address as throughout the video he sings the lyrics directly to the camera as if he is talking to the audience. The aspects of performance are again the lead man walking down the train as if telling the audience a story.

The video is narrative as it tells a story of people’s lives on the train; it has a clear beginning, middle and end. It starts with the train taking off and leaving the platform, the middle is then looking at characters on the train’s lives and finally the end everyone gets of the train as it reaches its destination. The video is non linear as even though there is a clear beginning, middle and end there are lots of flashbacks showing the bad things in characters lives.

The video produces a good image for the band as it shows them as being kind warm people that care about what other people are going threw. Although the lead singer stands out as being important shown threw the light shining behind him he also blends in as his clothes are quite normal, this could represent that even though they are famous they are still normal people that go threw similar problems.

The visual elements do relate to the lyrics of the song and I think the video illustrates what the lyrics mean. The video shows people in bad situations wishing they could do or be something and by realising that everyone has problems it gives them hope and happiness. There could also be religious connotations in the video as he sees there hell when they are on the train underground looking at the flashbacks of their lives, but then as the train reaches its destination there is a bright light above ground and this could therefore represent heaven. Also the girl that leads the lead singer by the hand down the train could represent the angel of the train as she stands out from everyone else on the train as she has very pale porcelain skin and near the end she has a glow around her.

The video is set underground on a train and lots of different people from different situations are sat together on the train. Everyone is wearing dark and dim colours which create a sad feel to the video as they are going threw problems in their lives. The lead singer is also in dark colours but stands out as he is wearing a bowler hat but then he takes his hat of which is showing that he is a normal person and isn’t better than anyone else on the train.

The camera is used well in the video as it lets the audience follow the story as a tracking shot is used when the lead singer walks down the train. The camera zooms in on different characters which help the audience to know which character the flashback is relating to. In the chefs flashback a mid shot is used and it then dissolves into a close up on a pan showing the audience his job, it also uses a close up to show another characters job as shows her body parts which also suggests she is not happy with her job. An extreme close up is used on the girl with pale skin as she is crying showing that everyone on the train has problems.

Editing is used well in the video as there are lots of flashbacks showing incites into peoples problems. The slow paced editing fits in well with the meaning, pace of the song and lyrics. Match on action is also used as the girl takes the hand of the lead singer and then walks him down the train.

The genre of the song is soulful pop you can tell that it is this genre as it is relaxing easy listening. The target audience for this music video would be people aged 30+ as they can relate to the lyrics and it is mellow easy listening music, also the Light House family are a 90’s band. The music channel I think the video would be played on would be something like smooth, Magic or VH1 as these channels target a middle age older audience.

Music Video Study 1

Lilly Allen – Smile
In the music video Smile by Lilly Allen she uses both direct and indirect mode of address. In parts of the video she is singing the lyrics to the camera addressing the audience, but then when it is the narrative part the audience is invisible. Lilly Allen is the star and performer in the music video, there are no dance routines as she uses realism and acts out what is happening as she reminisces her relationship.

The narrative of the video is linear for the bulk of it, however at the beginning there is a flashback of her and her boy friend so therefore it is non linear. Throughout the video there is a clear beginning middle and end. At the beginning her boyfriend has done something bad to hurt her feelings then in the middle it shows her getting her revenge on him and finally the ending her boyfriend now feels dependent on her as she helps him out and comforts him so she feels happy again.

The video creates the image that Lilly Allen is a very ordinary girl who is not very glamorous but is a bit of a chav. It shows her as a normal person that is not superficial and has the same problems as everyone else as she shows in the video the ups and downs in a relationship. At the same time the image of her as a strong independent female is also created as she shows she shouldn’t be messed with when she pulls the pranks on her boyfriend in the video.

The visual elements in the video amplify the song and its lyrics as when showing the reactions to what Lilly Allen has done it goes further than just the lyrics as it shows her pulling pranks on her boyfriend e.g. getting a group of hoodies to beat her boyfriend up.

Mise en scene illustrates how she wants to be seen as a normal person as all the locations are sit in normal areas her bedroom, his flat, cafe, a night club and on the street. Her clothes in the video make her blend in as they are very ordinary clothes, but then she also stands out as the colours are bright and she is wearing trainers with her dress and big hoop earrings which is like her trademark.

At the start of the video the camera uses major different close up shots of her face creating a montage of memories of her relationship and then her eating chocolate as she is upset. A mid shot is used on the hoodies in the street and a panning shot showing the group of hoodies. An over the shoulder shot is used when she was talking to her boyfriend. Also a point of view shot has been used when her boyfriends flat is being wrecked and when he finds the flat in that state a high angle shot is used to show him looking vulnerable . There is also a close up shot of Lily putting something in his drink which shows the audience that she is not to be messed with.

The pace of editing in the video matches well with the music as it has short, choppy shots. At the beginning it has short cuts creating a montage of her face which then shows the audience how she is feeling. Shot reverse shot is used a lot throughout the video showing conversations with her boyfriend this works well as you can see both characters reactions clearly. A speed change is used as the editing is sped up to show the boyfriend finding his flat in a mess but this also shows a passing of time.

The video represents Lily Alan as being a normal girl dealing with a break up of her relationship and the consequences of it. It also shows negative connotations of the youth of today as a gang in hoodies beat her boyfriend up. It also shows Lilly Allen as being a bit of a chav, vindictive and spiteful as she gets other men to go in and wreck his flat again showing she is not to be messed with.

There weren’t any special effects used throughout the video except for possibly at the end when she is walking down the street as a tracking shot on a green screen could have been used as parts like the sky may have been altered. Finally the genre of this video is pop as it is very upbeat and cheerful, I think the target audience would be teenagers as Lilly Allen is a young Artist that teenagers can relate to.

Initial notes on music video

Media - Music Video
In a typical music video you could expect to see:
· Band/Artist
· Instrument
· Genre specific
· A story – artist within the narrative
· Dancers/Dance routines
· Narrative Performance
· Special effects

Music videos are a marketing devise as they advertise/promote the song/artist and try to increase sales; it is selling the consumer a product. Music videos have been mainstream since the 1980’s but many people would argue that they’ve been around for longer e.g. some people say that A Hard Day’s Night by the Beetles in 1964 was the first music video but others say it was a musical sequence. In 1965 the beetles started to use film inserts used as a promotional tool, which lead to other bands starting to do the same. Strawberry Fields of Forever and Penny Lane by the Beetles where both directed by Peter Goldman, they were described as fancy as they used slow motion threw new technology and where more advanced. Then in 1981 music videos where made mainstream threw the launch of MTV, the first music video played on MTV was Video killed the radio star. After this music videos became standard as they where cheaply made and used techniques like the croma key.

Music videos are censored by the British Board of Film Classification to make sure they are suitable to be shown on television. In 1991 Michael Jackson’s video for Black or White was censored as people said he touched himself inappropriately in the video. Other music videos that have been censored are the Prodigy’s Smack My Bitch Up and Robbie Williams Rock DJ.

Some people may argue that music videos have made pop superficially based on image. Are pop songs enough on their own to make a meaning and pleasure for the audience?
“A good music video is a clip that responds to the pleasure of music, in which that music is made visual, either in new ways or in a way that accentuates existing video associations.” 1992 Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin made a list of points that he thought where important in a music video:
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics such as dance routines normally shown in Boy/Girl band videos.
2. The relationship between lyrics and visuals either contradicts or illustrates the lyrics. (to make sense together or make no sense at all to the lyrics)
3. The relationship between music and visuals will either illustrate amplify or contradict what is happening on screen.
4. The demands of the record label will include lots of close ups of the artist(s). Artists will develop motifs which reoccur across the style and video.
5. Frequent references to the notion of looking voyeurism of the female body.
6. Inter textual references.

The basic function or purpose of a music video is to promote the band/artist and their song this should then lead to an increase in sales for the track.
The first music videos where produced in 1965 for the Beetles songs Strawberry Fields of Forever and Penny Lane, which were both produced by Peter Goldman.

When commissioning a music video the commissioning editor will firstly contact between three and six directors who he thinks would be suitable for the artist in question. Then they look threw show reels of their past work to help decide which directors to approach. The directors are then sent a tape of the single and are asked to write a treatment for a video to accompany the track. Artist and management look threw the treatments and then decide which director is best for the job. It is then the commissioning editor and the production company’s job to settle on a budget and then a contract is drawn up between the record company and Production Company. According to Andrew Godwin the relationship between the visuals in the video and the lyrics will illustrate, amplify or contradict what is happening on screen.

A music video treatment or pitch is created by directors that have been selected to come up with ideas for a video to accompany a song. They will then share their ideas with the artist and management in a treatment which will in no more than a page and a half describe what happens in the video and how it will look. By creating a treatment it helps the artist and management decide which idea they like best for their song.

When making a student video you should avoid working with your friends as it is good to work with friends but it may be distracting and having a good time may get in the way of getting the work done. Also when choosing your track it may be better to go with little-known or unknown acts, as by choosing a well known act you will already have an image in your mind of the type of video they would produce. It could then become an imitation of their video, so by choosing a less well known artist it gives you a blank canvas for your own interpretation.
